Do you ever see ads?

Hi, I’m a relatively new Mojeek user – I used to use it a few years ago, but later stopped due to the fact that I didn’t think the product was mature enough, and I didn’t believe it had a chance unless it started to make money (sorry for being blunt, I truly believed in Cliqz if anyone remembers it, and I knew some of the team, but yeah, it was shut down before they could start raising revenue).
Aaaanyway. So I’ve been using mojeek for a few days now, but I have yet to see a single ad, depsite some of my queries being very, how can I put this, “targetable” – e.g. I’m searching for specific products to buy, travel-related queries, etc.

I know Mojeek is running a beta where companies can sign up and publish their ads, so is anyone seeing them? Do we have any statistics? And out of curiosity, what is Mojeek’s revenue, if this is known? I could only find a blog post from 2020 and my understanding is that Mojeek is still mostly running on private investors’ money, plus paid API and ads revenue – what are the profitability prospects?

And lastly, where can I donate? I’d be happy to donate a small sum monthly.

Thanks

Hello @sqrl and welcome to the community.

This issue came up recently. And the Mojeek CEO replied to that thread:

You can read an older post with some out-of-date information here:

With regard to your question, I have seen ads on Mojeek but not recently.

Hi, thanks, I did find the first message you quoted, I was wondering if there was any more specific data. I rememebr that duckduckgo used to have a traffic page where one could see how many searches were being done. Maybe I’m asking for too much, but I’d like to see more data on how much traffic mojeek generates, and how much revenue they raise. Of course, it’s just out of curiosity and if this data isn’t available I completely understand.

Do you know if there’s a way for us to donate to Mojeek?

The older post referred to Coil which would donate money to participating websites. But, I believe Coil shut down.

I don’t believe there is a way for regular users to donate.

Since Mojeek is privately held, I don’t believe there are any financial reports available to the public.

They will be back in the office tomorrow. Please check back in tomorrow to see if the staff provide any additional information.

Thanks a lot for your interest; as @mike has posted above, the outline of how money is made have been answered before on this forum, but we do not currently divulge either traffic or revenue figures.

At this point we’re not taking donations; the methods which @Colin outlined in the referenced posts are our revenue-generators. If you’re looking to help us out and have another valuable resource, time, then there’s a blog post which outlines some of the ways you can assist Mojeek in becoming bigger and better!

Thanks. Unfortunately I’m afraid that my friends and family are tired of hearing my recommendations about products that nobody knows, lol. I was really hoping that I could donate and help your marketing budget to reach more customers who aren’t tired of my rants against big tech.
I’ll keep using Mojeek then, I hope to start seeing ads at some point. Maybe I’ll share some of your blog posts to my social media profiles.

One question, have you thought about adding yourself to https://www.madeinbritain.org/ ?
There is a technology section. I guess on top of attracting users who are privacy-aware, you might also try to attract people who are looking to shop British. Just a thought.

It has been looked at before, yes; although Mojeek is a good fit, the traffic for the site as a whole (considering there would be a fair few clicks before finding Mojeek) is not great for the price.

Even for a few hundreds of pounds, there are better places to spend that money - was the assessment. Thanks a lot for the suggestion though.
