The Linux Experiment Mentions Mojeek: Google Search sucks, AI is everywhere: what should you use?

This is a fairly high profile mention of Mojeek, at least among a certain crowd

The video is a pretty good evaluation of the search engine landscape in light of the Bing API news. The mention of Mojeek was brief, but positive. He mentioned he got poor results in some cases, and very good results in other cases during the short time he spent testing it. He said similar things about Brave Search and lumped the two in the same category in terms of quality[1]. He said he might use it more in the future.

Would have been good to mention that in addition to Mojeek being an independent index, Mojeek also owns their own physical servers. That’s an absolute rarity if your name isn’t Google or Microsoft.

It would have been nice for Nick to mention Kagi’s sources in more depth and that it has its own indexes, but I guess he didn’t like it enough to evaluate it much further.

For those of us who haven’t used Google in a very long time, this video is an interesting window into what the experience is like.

  1. I think Brave Search quality is better than Mojeek right now + it can handle queries in other languages I use that Mojeek can’t, but Mojeek is still decent nowadays and it has way less AI stuff. It’s a more pleasant experience for me. Also, Brave cheats quite a lot with their method of building their index! They technically rip off Bing/Google results for free with the Web Discovery Project, and that’s how Tailcat was originally built. It’s why the quality varies so drastically compared to Mojeek, which is more predictable. ↩︎

There are lots of shallow reviews hoping to catch some of the high volume searches relating to the search engine topic. Shame this one didn’t pick up on your important detail on Brave’s sources.

Mojeek exposure is great to see, and anything that highlights alternatives is probably a good thing.

These videos could be using searchenginemap.com for a wireframe of their video and all the options.
