Framework Strix Halo Mini PC

Framework is planning to offer Linux support.

There will be three models available at launch:

  • Ryzen AI Max 385 (8 cores, 16 threads + 32-core Radeon 8050S graphics) + 32GB RAM for $1099
  • Ryzen AI Max 395+ (16 cores, 32-threads + 40=core Radeon 8060S graphics) + 64GB RAM for $1599
  • Ryzen AI Max 395+ (16 cores, 32-threads + 40=core Radeon 8060S graphics) + 128GB RAM for $1999

I see that some people are looking at the Liliputing link.

Just keep in mind that the RAM for Strix Halo is soldered to the board because of the speed and stability involved. (And, that memory is shared between the iGPU and OS.) So, whatever amount of RAM you pick, you’re stuck with.

Other Comments

Speaking as a Zen 3+ user, memory retraining has been a bother at times. So, this soldered memory should at least address that issue for AMD.

If anyone is looking at discrete Nvidia 4060 or 4070 laptops, I’d be interested in price/performance comparisons. That’s where the Radeon 8000S should be competing in terms of gaming.

One comment that tickled me was that on the 128GB version of the ROG Flow Z13, you can give the iGPU 96GB of video memory. For comparison, the desktop version of the RTX 5090 has 32GB of memory. Obviously, that doesn’t mean the Radeon 8000S is better. But, recently, some games were broken simply due to running out of memory on RTX 3000 and RTX 4000 video cards. So, I predict the Radeon 8000S will still be useful when its competitors are running out of memory.

I had not mentioned it before, but for those who don’t know, Strix Halo is the first example of integrated graphics that can compete with mid-range discrete graphics cards. So, Strix Halo is more of a technical marvel than a clear champion. One thing in favor of Strix Halo is it combines PC-compatible gaming with energy efficiency. So, you can play a PC game on a tablet or mini PC. And, in the wake of the Steam Deck, some PC gaming compatibility transferred to Linux as well. Of course you can install Windows on Ryzen computers for the best PC game compatibility.
