Facebook Threads

Facebook launches Twitter alternative.

Mr Zuckerberg said there would be no ads on Threads initially, giving the company time to fine-tune the app, which allows users to scroll endlessly through text-based posts.

“Our approach will be the same as all our other products: make the product work well first, then see if we can get it on a clear path to 1 billion people, and only then think about monetization at that point,” he wrote.

Meta says it’s working to make Threads compatible and integrative with other apps that support the ActivityPub protocol, such as WordPress and Mastodon. In the future, the company ideally wants Threads posts to be accessible for anyone with a compatible app, whether you have a Threads account or not.

Ha ha ha.

How does Mark think he will be integrating Threads into ActivityPub AND monetize that app? I don’t think he will succeed if he just copies his modus operandi from Facebook or Instagram

They are clearly going to hoover up a bunch of personal data and sell targeted advertising.

Data collected by Threads can include users’ sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, biometric data, trade union membership, pregnancy status, politics, and religious beliefs. Threads can also collect data on users’ employment, as well as health and fitness. Beyond that, the app also can collect data monitoring users’ location and other web activity.

I doubt Threads will support ActivityPub because Facebook has been criticized for not interoperating before and because there is no downside for saying one thing and doing another. Nobody cared that Apple is closed source or that Google became evil.
