I have a few “frustrations” with the converter function in Mojeek. Am I the only one encountering these?
Comma vs dot: When I enter a query in Mojeek like “22.5 inch to cm”, I get the converter with the appropriate result. Being used to using a comma as decimal separator, I would most often type “22,5 inch to cm” which doesn’t trigger the converter. I know I’m flawed, I didn’t enjoy the right education to use the dot as decimal separator .
Multiple conversions: When I have multiple conversions, I seem to have to restart with a query every time again. I can’t seem to just enter another number in the converter, change the units of the conversion or change the type of conversion and get a new result with those new settings. The result just sticks to the one I started with.
I think it is reasonable to accept a comma as the decimal point. I assume, then, the period becomes a thousands separator? I’m not sure what the various conventions are: US, Europe, India, etc.
It is a bit strange that the conversion applet has user interface elements. But, the only one which seems to update the result is the topmost drop-down box (Area, Data, Distance, …) Though, personally, I’ve already formed the habit of updating my query to change the amounts or units.
I don’t think Europe has consequent conventions (at least around where I’m from). In primary school, you learn to use the comma as a decimal separator and nothing as a thousands separator. After that, anything is allowed. The result is that you can find dots as decimal separator (thanks to Anglo-Saxon influences) or thousands separator. Sometimes you might find a space as a thousands separator for readability.
The only rare one you won’t find quickly is having a comma as a thousands separator.
